Railway infrastructure is a critical component of national transportation systems, and ensuring its safety is paramount. Track-related faults, especially surface or internal cracks, pose significant risks including derailments and accidents. This project proposes an Advanced Crack Detection and Alert System for railways that utilizes ultrasonic sensors, GPS, motor control, and ESP32 microcontrollers to autonomously inspect railway tracks and alert authorities in real time. The system comprises three ultrasonic sensors strategically placed on a rail-inspection robot to continuously scan the track surface and detect cracks based on time-of-flight measurement anomalies. The ESP32 acts as the main controller, processing sensor data and triggering alerts when irregularities are detected. A GPS module is integrated to record the precise location of each detected crack, enabling rapid and targeted maintenance. A motor driver module controls the movement of the robot along the track, powered by a rechargeable battery for autonomous operation. Additionally, an ESP32-CAM module captures real-time images of the track when a crack is detected, providing visual confirmation and aiding in remote diagnosis. The system sends real-time alerts, including crack coordinates and images, to a central monitoring system via wireless communication. This comprehensive approach ensures proactive maintenance, reduces human dependency, and significantly enhances the safety and reliability of railway operations.
