Abstract
Floods are one of the most dangerous natural disasters that cause severe damage to human life, property, and the environment. Early detection and timely warning systems are important to reduce the impact of floods. This project presents an IoT-based Flood Early Detection and Avoidance System using Arduino and NodeMCU to monitor water levels and environmental conditions in real time.
In this system, a waterproof ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the water level in rivers, dams, or drainage systems. A DHT11 sensor is used to monitor temperature and humidity, which helps in understanding weather conditions that may lead to flooding. The Arduino microcontroller collects data from the sensors and processes it continuously.
When the water level rises above a predefined threshold, the system identifies a possible flood condition. A buzzer is activated to provide a local warning signal. At the same time, the NodeMCU (ESP8266) sends the sensor data to the Blynk IoT platform through the internet, allowing users to monitor water levels and environmental parameters remotely using a smartphone.
A GPS module is used to provide the exact location of the monitored area, which helps emergency services identify the flood-prone location quickly. An LCD display shows real-time sensor values such as water level, temperature, and humidity locally.
This system provides an efficient, low-cost, and real-time solution for flood monitoring and early warning. By providing timely alerts and remote monitoring through IoT technology, the system can help authorities and communities take preventive actions and reduce the damage caused by floods.
Introduction
Floods are one of the most common and destructive natural disasters in many parts of the world. They cause serious damage to human life, agriculture, infrastructure, and the environment. Floods usually occur due to heavy rainfall, rising river levels, dam overflow, or poor drainage systems. In many cases, the major problem is the lack of early warning systems, which leads to delayed response and increases the damage caused by floods.
With the advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, it is possible to continuously monitor environmental conditions and water levels in real time. IoT-based systems can collect data from different sensors and send it to users through the internet. This helps authorities and people receive early alerts and take preventive actions before the flood situation becomes dangerous.
The Flood Early Detection and Avoidance System uses Arduino and NodeMCU as the main controllers to monitor water levels and weather conditions. A waterproof ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance between the sensor and the water surface, which helps in identifying the water level. A DHT11 sensor is used to monitor temperature and humidity, which are important environmental factors related to rainfall and flood conditions.
The system also includes a GPS module to provide the exact location of the monitored area. This helps in identifying the flood-prone region and allows emergency services to respond quickly. An LCD display is used to show real-time sensor readings such as water level, temperature, and humidity. When the water level rises above a predefined limit, a buzzer is activated to provide a local warning signal.
The NodeMCU ESP8266 module connects the system to the internet and sends real-time data to the Blynk IoT platform, where users can monitor the flood conditions through a smartphone or web dashboard. By combining sensors, microcontrollers, and IoT technology, this system provides a low-cost, reliable, and real-time flood monitoring solution that can help reduce the impact of floods and improve public safety.

Objectives
1. To detect the water level using a waterproof ultrasonic sensor and identify possible flood conditions.
2. To monitor environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity using the DHT11 sensor.
3. To provide early warning alerts using a buzzer when the water level rises above the safe limit.
4. To display real-time data such as water level, temperature, and humidity on the LCD display.
5. To send sensor data to the internet using the NodeMCU ESP8266 module.
6. To monitor flood conditions remotely through the Blynk mobile application.
7. To provide the exact location of the monitored area using the GPS module.
8. To develop a low-cost and reliable IoT-based flood monitoring system that helps reduce damage caused by floods.
