Abstract
The Online Examination System is a web-based platform designed to automate and digitize the traditional examination process. The system is developed using Python with the Flask framework and uses SQLite as the backend database. It provides two main modules: Admin and User.
The administrator can manage users, add/delete questions, monitor performance, and analyze results through a dashboard. Users can register, log in securely, attempt subject-based exams, and receive instant results. The system supports both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and descriptive questions with keyword-based partial evaluation.
Security features such as password hashing and session management are implemented to ensure safe authentication. The system also includes random question generation, attempt limits, and result tracking. Overall, the platform improves efficiency, accuracy, and scalability compared to traditional examination systems.

Introduction
The rapid evolution of digital technologies has significantly transformed the education sector, leading to the widespread adoption of online platforms for teaching, learning, and assessment. Among these advancements, online examination systems have emerged as a critical solution for conducting assessments efficiently, especially in the era of remote learning and digital education. Traditional examination systems, which rely heavily on manual processes, are increasingly becoming inadequate due to their limitations in scalability, accuracy, and efficiency.In conventional examination methods, institutions are required to prepare question papers manually, distribute them physically, conduct examinations under supervision, evaluate answer sheets, and publish results. This process is not only time-consuming but also prone to human errors such as incorrect evaluation, miscalculation of marks, and data mismanagement. Additionally, maintaining physical records of examinations creates challenges in storage, retrieval, and security. These issues become more significant as the number of students increases.
To overcome these challenges, the Online Examination System is designed as a web-based platform that automates the entire examination process. The system enables institutions to create, manage, and conduct examinations digitally while ensuring accuracy, transparency, and efficiency. It eliminates the need for paper-based examinations and provides instant result generation, thereby saving time and reducing administrative workload.The proposed system is developed using the Flask web framework in Python, which provides a lightweight and efficient backend for handling application logic. SQLite is used as the database for storing user information, questions, examination records, and results. The system follows a modular architecture with separate interfaces for administrators and users, ensuring structured management and role-based access control.
One of the key features of the system is its ability to support both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and descriptive questions. While MCQs are evaluated automatically through direct comparison, descriptive answers are assessed using a keyword-based evaluation mechanism that enables partial scoring. This enhances the flexibility of the system by allowing both objective and subjective assessments.Security is an important aspect of the system. Passwords are encrypted using the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, ensuring secure authentication. The system also uses session management to maintain login states and prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, randomized question generation is implemented to reduce the chances of cheating and ensure fairness during examinations.
The Online Examination System also includes features such as subject-wise attempt limitations, automated subject locking, and detailed result analysis. These features help maintain examination integrity while providing valuable insights into user performance.Overall, the system provides a scalable, secure, and efficient solution for conducting online examinations. It is suitable for educational institutions, training centers, certification bodies, and organizations that require reliable and automated assessment platforms.
